Definition
The Next Age refers to the period of history following the fulfillment of the biblical age. It is characterized by reconciliation, the absence of covenantal law, and direct access to the Spirit of Christ.
Context
Within fulfilled eschatology, apostolic prophecy concerning judgment and the end of the age culminated in first century events. With the close of that age, humanity entered a new condition in which religious mediation and condemnation no longer define the relationship between God and humanity.
The Next Age is not a future utopia. It is the present condition of humanity in light of fulfilled promises.
Implications
Faith in the Next Age is not oriented toward escaping wrath. It is oriented toward living relationally in love and liberty. Institutions no longer function as spiritual intermediaries. Responsibility rests with the individual.
Common Misunderstanding
The Next Age is sometimes interpreted as a denial of suffering or evil. It does not eliminate material hardship. It reframes humanity’s standing before God.
