Interview with Lindsay Hansen Park, Executive Director of Sunstone, Part 1

AI-generated summary

Central Claim/Structure: This episode establishes foundational context for discussing feminist perspectives within Mormonism rather than presenting a theological argument. Shawn McCraney introduces an upcoming dialogue with Lindsay Hansen Park, Executive Director of Sunstone Magazine, deliberately avoiding pre-interview research to maintain openness and represent the "common person."

Key Framing: McCraney emphasizes his intentional ignorance of feminist discourse and Mormon feminism specifically, positioning himself as potentially vulnerable but committed to authentic dialogue. He plans a biographical approach (grandparents through present) before discussing substantive theological views in Part 2.

Yeshuan Relevance: While no explicit theological content appears in these opening 2000 words, the episode's framework reflects the Yeshuan emphasis on subjective experience and authentic engagement over predetermined doctrinal positions. The approach suggests truth emerges through genuine dialogue rather than established institutional frameworks—consistent with Yeshuan critique of rigid religious structures.

Significance: This introductory segment prioritizes relational groundwork and generational/gender dialogue as prerequisites for meaningful theological discussion about women's roles within institutional religion.

Worship in Spirit and Truth

Live from Salt Lake City, this is Heart of the Matter where we do all we can to worship God in spirit and Truth. And I’m your host Shawn McCraney.

We have entered into doing some interviews and tonight and next week we have the pleasure of having Lyndsay Hansen Park with us who I will introduce in a moment. Two weeks from tonight we will have John Hajichek, the self proclaimed most unique Mormon on the face of the earth, and then the week after that Dave Donaldson, who runs a prison ministry.

Lyndsay Hansen Park

Tonight, we have the pleasure (I am now introducing you) of having Lyndsay Hansen Park. Welcome, Lyndsay.

Now, before we get into it, I have an admission. We like to approach interviews with people as fresh and open as possible. Most interviewers research their guests but I have taken the approach to come in blind to the guest and all that they represent as a means for me to represent the common man or woman, and to engage and react to what the guest will say and do here when they are with me.

My admission is that I have more than ever been tempted to read up on you Lyndsay, for two reasons: I have been told by a couple people how well read and intelligent you are and secondly, I am really, truly unschooled in the platforms, language and opinions of feminists. I mean, I am really uncertain about what it is a feminist – especially a Mormon feminist – represents.

My reason, therefore, for wanting to research you was for self-preservation – I don’t want to look stupid nor do I want you to here on this show to own me on concepts you deal with on a daily basis. However, my policy IS to know as little as possible about our guest, no matter how intimidating that may be, and I have stuck to that.

A Different Approach to Interviews

The only thing I did was read one sentence that describes you as a blogger, a mother, an independent Mormon, and the director or editor of Sunstone Magazine. If there are any errors in that you can clear them up as we talk. What I would LOVE to do, which is what we try to do with all guests, is for you to take us back – as far back as your grandparents if you want, then to parents, siblings, upbringing and important and influential factors in your life. I will interrupt with questions – especially as they relate to your faith and walk in the LDS church.

It is my hope that once we lay this groundwork of who you are, that next week we can talk openly about your views.

The reason I think this will be valuable, is because I come from an old school view relative to SOME things (SOME) related to women. I also would consider myself a Masculinist – and a purveyor of things truly male – and so I do look forward to dialoguing with a feminist – and to see if off the cuff, two people – of two genders – and of two generations, can agree.

So, Lyndsay – thank you so much. If you would . . .
