Central Claim: Shawn McCraney argues that the LDS Church's greatest theological error is its depreciation of the Bible's authority and completeness. He contends that Joseph Smith deliberately positioned the Bible as incomplete and inferior to justify introducing the Book of Mormon as "another witness of Jesus Christ."
Biblical Basis: McCraney references the Bible's inherent sufficiency and critiques the LDS Article of Faith 8's conditional acceptance of the Bible ("so far as it is translated correctly"), which he views as undermining biblical authority.
Yeshuan Perspective: This critique reflects the Yeshuan emphasis on sola scriptura—the sufficiency of Scripture alone. McCraney argues that adding extra-biblical texts (Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price) creates competing authorities, distorting authentic Christian faith. For Yeshuans, true faith depends on the completed, authoritative Word of God rather than continuing revelation through institutional authorities. The LDS conditional acceptance of Scripture exemplifies how institutional religion substitutes human interpretation for biblical truth.

Positive and Negative Perceptions of the LDS Church
When it comes to positive feelings about the LDS Church most people think, rightly or wrongly, in terms of a few broad categories: strong family, self-sufficiency, clean living, organized, friendly.
When it comes to negative feelings about the LDS Church most people think, rightly or wrongly, in terms of a few main areas: blacks and the priesthood, polygamy, blood atonement, authoritarian, the “c” word, mountain meadows, becoming God's, Jesus, the spirit brother of Satan.
The LDS Church and the Bible
Today I am going to talk about an area for which I feel the LDS Church needs to repent and apologize. In my opinion, it is the greatest – the greatest – wrong Mormonism has introduced to its membership at large and the leadership of the past, and the present, will stand before God Almighty someday to account for this unconscionable state of affairs.
What is the wrong? The LDS attitude, treatment, and opinion of the Word of God – the Bible.
Joseph Smith and The Book of Mormon
When Joseph Smith introduced The Book of Mormon – which Latter-day Saints call “Another Witness of Jesus Christ,” he suggested that the Bible was not complete. He had to. If the Bible was complete what need would anyone have for another book or witness? None. So it became necessary for the propagation of the Book of Mormon and the differentiation of Mormonism from other start-up religions, for the Bible to be considered a bit tainted, slightly off, and inferior to the new witness.
Current Stance on The Book of Mormon and the Bible
Not more than a week ago the officials of Mormonism stood in their general conference and said: “The Book of Mormon is the most correct book . . . (check it)
The Bible was officially legitimized by the Church both in the actual text of the Book of Mormon and in the _______________ article of faith of the Church, which says: We believe the Bible to be the word of God so far as it is translated correctly. We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
No matter what a Latter-day Saint claims relative to the Bible – how much they love it, appreciate it, consider it the Word of God.
